Victoza Investigation

Victoza (generic name liraglutide) is a drug prescribed for diabetes.  It was approved by the FDA for sale in the United States in January 2010.  However, by June 2011, warnings were issued by the FDA linking Victoza to pancreatitis, thyroid cancer and renal failure.

On April 19, 2012, consumer rights advocate Public Citizen filed a petition with the FDA calling for the agency to immediately remove Victoza from the market because "it puts patients at higher risk of thyroid cancer, pancreatitis, serious allergic reactions and kidney failure that outweigh any documented clinical benefits."  To view a copy of Public Citizen's petition regarding Victoza, click here.

Victoza is manufactured by New Jersey based Novo Nordisk, Inc.  Each month, approximately 150,000 Victoza prescriptions are now being filled, which translates into almost two million prescriptions a year.
